The 3 Worst Drinks for Your Oral Health

If your teeth are looking shabby or feeling sensitive, you might want to consider your sugar intake. While gummy bears and ice cream might be the first sugar snacks that pop into your mind, beverages are often higher in acid and sugar than everyday snacks and can wreak havoc on your smile.

According to SheFinds Media, who interviewed a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills, these are the three worst drinks for your teeth.

#1 Soda Causes Decay – Coke and Pepsi Also Stain Your Teeth

A single Coca-Cola contains a whopping 39 grams of sugar. While the nutrition information says there are two servings per can, let’s be honest: We drink the entire can. Because you tend to savor a can of Coke or Pepsi, rather than downing it in less than a minute, this can mean long-term exposure to high amounts of sugar.

#2 Worst for Staining – Coffee and Black Tea

Coffee, dark teas, and red wine will leave their mark if you consume them regularly. Not only can you add sugar to coffee and tea but all three of these beverages are rich in color, which can leave your smile dark and older looking.

We offer a number of teeth whitening options because we know that most people need at least one cup of coffee to get fired up in the morning, making it tough to give up.

#3 High in Acid – Fruit Juices

While juice comes from fruit and fruit is healthy, many juices are high in sugar (and acid) and can destroy the enamel covering your teeth. Additionally, parents tend to offer their children fruit juice as a healthy alternative to soda, putting their teeth at risk.

When you consume a sugary or acidic drink, wait about 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. This allows the pH of your mouth to return to normal levels and reduces the potential for wear on the enamel.
