Gum disease can spring up quickly. It most often occurs in patients who neglect their home care or professional dental cleanings, but it can actually happen to usually healthy patients because of changing medical or hormonal conditions. It is important to recognize the signs of gum disease so that you can seek help right away. Without treatment, gum disease rarely resolves on its own. In fact, it may dramatically worsen in a short period of time because the bacteria that cause gum disease multiply quickly.

Signs of Gum Disease

One of the first signs of gum disease is blood when you brush or floss your teeth. Anytime your gums bleed, it is a sign that something is wrong. You may have something lodged in your gums, which will often resolve with a few days of diligent care, but if the bleeding persists, you can bet that there is some level of gum disease present.

Bad breath is another indicator of gum disease. You may not notice your own bad breath, but perhaps a loved one mentioned it to you. We will always let you know if we smell periodontal odor and help you find a solution to treat your gum disease and improve your breath.

Tooth mobility is a late-stage sign of gum disease. By the time your teeth move, you may not be able to save it.

Recession, or the shrinking of your gums, is a sign of gum disease and can also result from a misaligned bite.

Deterioration of bone is one of the most serious side effects of gum disease. Once your bone disappears, it can put your facial features and your remaining teeth at risk.
