Feeling Dental Anxiety? Maybe a Workout Could Help!

Ease Dental Anxiety | Nederland Family Dental: Dr. G. Whitney Gomez, DDS

According to a recent study in the Journal of Depression and Anxiety, taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes prior to your dental appointment can reduce dental anxiety before, during, and after your procedure.

Exercise has been long known to decrease stress and increase feelings of well-being, so this should come as no surprise to patients who are regularly active. Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s “feel good” chemical, and also activates the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, the brain's stress-fighting areas.

How We Manage Dental Anxiety

If you take a 30-minute walk and it’s just not enough, rest assured that when you arrive at Nederland Family Dental, you will be greeted by a team who is sensitive to the needs of fearful patients. Many of our long-time patients started out with dental anxiety that has gradually decreased with the trust and rapport we build.

We also offer sedation dentistry for patients who need some help getting into the chair. Oral sedation requires the use of prescription medication, so a full medical history and consultation will be necessary to ensure that sedation dentistry is safe for you.

What to Expect with Sedation Dentistry

Most patients report feeling completely comfortable during their procedure and have little to no memory of the actual appointment. We schedule appropriately to ensure that you stay sedated during the entire procedure.

Many of our patients fall asleep in the chair, dreaming away their entire appointment.

Afterward, you will still be groggy, so you will need a ride home and someone to keep you company for the rest of the day. You should avoid making big decisions or operating a vehicle for the rest of the day.

Sedation dentistry is safe for most healthy patients.
