What We Look for During a Dental Exam

Have you ever wondered what we look for in a dental exam? It probably seems like a mystery because you can’t see inside your mouth as we do it! When we perform an oral exam, it is to identify any oral conditions that you may have in the earliest stages, when they are easiest to treat.

What We Look For During Exams

We check each of your individual teeth for decay or cracks. Dr. Gomez will examine each tooth and let you know if they find something that requires attention. That way, if you do have decay or a crack, we can address it before it becomes painful and difficult to treat.

We examine your gums and evaluate your oral health. Having healthy gums is essential to good oral health and a beautiful smile. Gum disease sneaks up quickly and can worsen systemic health issues like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and has even been linked to Alzheimer’s. We will look for signs of bleeding and pocketing – both signs of periodontal disease and recommend appropriate treatment to control the infection.

Does your bite feel comfortable? Do you wake up with headaches or feel like your teeth are sensitive? You might have a clenching and grinding habit that can give you problems with your jaw and make your facial and head muscles feel sore. We will check your bite, ensuring that your teeth are properly aligned for the best function.

Oral cancer is a particularly deadly form of cancer. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, more than 48,000 people receive a diagnosis each year. Your dentist is often the first to notice the signs of oral cancer and early detection can save your life!
