Taking Care of Your New Dental Implant

If you have recently had dental implant treatment, you might find yourself admiring your new tooth in the mirror and enjoying eating the foods you love. Your dental implant is strong and similar to having your natural tooth back again. When patients have dental implants in our Southeast Texas dental office, we like to provide some advice to get the most out of your investment.

DON’T CHEW ICE (OR ANYTHING TOO HARD)

Dental crowns are strong but susceptible to the same types of damage as a natural tooth. Biting into anything too hard can fracture the crown and then you would need to have it replaced. Don’t chew ice, hard candy, or anything that causes you to stop and think about a broken tooth.

BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR HOME HYGIENE

Gum disease may mean the early demise of your dental implant. A gum infection may move into the bone that supports your implant and destroys its foundation.

Brush twice a day. Don’t just run the toothbrush across your teeth; do a thorough job and don’t use too much force because it can damage your gum tissue.

Floss each day. For single implants, you can floss them just like your natural teeth. Dental implant bridges will require a little extra effort.

DON’T SKIP THE X-RAYS

X-rays help Dr. Gomez see what is beneath the surface of your gums and enamel. If anything is wrong, he will be able to detect the problem in its early stages and potentially save your dental implant.
