What is gum disease?

Most people have heard of gum disease or gingivitis. The cause of gum disease centers on plaque buildup that isn't removed through brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings. Gum disease in the early stages can be easily treated and prevented. Smokers are highly susceptible to gum disease, but patients can suffer from gingivitis due to poor oral health, medications, genetics, teeth grinding, and more.

Gingivitis is often referred to when talking about gum disease; this is the first stage of the disease and can be easily treated. When left untreated, gingivitis can turn into gum disease, which itself can become periodontal disease. Each stage of the disease can have an impact on your oral health, with late-stage periodontal disease affecting your gum line, bone loss, and, ultimately, tooth loss.

Regular tooth brushing and flossing, as well as routine dental cleanings, can prevent gingivitis and worse.

Common Signs of Gum Disease Include:

  • Red, bleeding, or swollen gums
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • "Longer" teeth, or gum recession
  • Abscessed teeth

For some Nederland, TX, patients, there exist few symptoms. Gum disease can be asymptotic, meaning that symptoms are mild or aren't noticeable. The only way to truly keep track of oral health is by visiting Dr. Gomez and his professional dental staff. Dental cleanings and exams allow us to keep track of any changes or abnormalities to your teeth and gums, and prevent future dental problems from occurring.
