Dental Crowns and Bridges
Dental Crowns at Nederland Family Dental
Like other restorations, dental crowns are designed to restore the health of your teeth. However, dental crowns offer an additional function – they protect your tooth from breaking.
Dental crowns fit over your natural tooth, like a protective cover. They cover your tooth completely from your gumline to your chewing surface. We design them to work well with your bite and fit your opposing teeth so that chewing is comfortable.
We recommend dental crowns when the structure of your tooth is compromised. You may have deep decay, a cracked tooth, a split tooth, or a tooth that had a root canal. Some root canal teeth require dental crowns because teeth become brittle after root canal procedures.
Getting a Dental Crown
At Nederland Family Dental, we create custom dental crowns for our patients. We start by removing all decay or damaged tooth structure and creating a core buildup, if necessary. A core buildup adds to your natural tooth structure giving your crown a stable foundation.
Next, we create a temporary crown to hold you over until we receive your permanent crown from our dental lab. Each crown is designed to fit with your other teeth and comes in porcelain, which we can shade to look like your other teeth, or a variety of metals. Call our office to get your consultation.
Protect Damaged Teeth with Dental Crowns
When we make a recommendation for a certain type of treatment or procedure, it is because we believe that it will be the best way to protect your teeth. Each person is different and each situation requires careful diagnosis and treatment planning.
When we recommend a dental crown, it is because we want to protect – and even save your tooth. A dental crown completely covers your natural tooth and absorbs some of the force from chewing – something a filling and other types of restorations cannot do.
What a Dental Crown Can Help With
If you have a cracked tooth, a fractured tooth, a tooth with deep decay, or you had a root canal, you may need a dental crown to save your tooth. Anytime the structure of your natural tooth is compromised, chewing, grinding your teeth, or biting into something puts at risk. When we cover your tooth with a dental crown, it holds your tooth structure together and protects it.
When we recommend treatment, we will give you the options we think will get the job done and keep you in the best oral condition. We want you to feel comfortable with the treatment you receive in our office so we encourage you to talk to us about any concerns or questions you may have.
Dentures and Partials
Dentures Could be Right for You if You are Missing Teeth
Patients with missing teeth have enjoyed the benefits of dentures for centuries.
Dentures themselves have dramatically improved over the years. Today, they look more realistic than ever and give patients a reliable method of replacing missing teeth.
In order for dentures to fit well, you have to have enough bone to hold your denture in place. For your upper denture, this is usually not a problem since the dentures uses your upper palate to create suction, holding your upper denture in place well enough to eat most foods.
Often, the lower denture creates more problems when it comes to fit. A lower denture can move and come loose as you chew or speak if your bony ridge is diminished due to resorption, or bone loss. For many patients, this significantly reduces the foods they can eat and makes them feel self-conscious.
Implant-Supported Dentures
Fortunately, at Nederland Family Dental, we have a solution for ill-fitting dentures. We can place several dental implants to hold your denture in place. Dental implants give you greater stability, function, and confidence, and they can also allow you to eat a wider variety of foods.
The best way to find out if you are a good candidate for dentures is to call our Southeast Texas dental office to schedule a consultation.
Dentures have come a long way since people first started wearing them—and even since dentists dentures in nederland txfirst introduced modern dentures decades ago.
If you’re considering dentures in Nederland, TX, you can rest assured that they will look natural and attractive.
Because more high-quality dental materials are available than ever before, it’s easier for dentists to make dentures that look like natural teeth than it was in the past. While dentures of the past consisted only of cheap, fragile plastics, modern dentures rely on sturdy ceramic to replicate existing teeth.
We can customize your dentures to reflect the characteristics of your natural smile, matching the gum color closely to your actual gums and the false teeth to your natural teeth if you’re getting a partial denture. Your Nederland, TX dentures will have depth, texture, and the necessary variances that help them look like real teeth rather than a row of perfect plastic.
Our dentist is happy to meet with you if you have additional questions or concerns about the look and feel of your dentures. If you have missing teeth and are considering different tooth replacement options, dentures make a great choice because they are versatile and often less expensive than other dental restorations.
Gum Disease Treatment
Gum disease can have a lasting effect and a negative impact on your dental health, along with your general well-being. Preventive dentistry is critical in preventing long-term tooth and bone loss that gum disease can result in. Patients in Nederland, TX, benefit from routine check-ups to ensure that gum disease does not burden their oral health. Chronic gum disease can contribute to health issues like heart, arthritic, and respiratory disease.
At Nederland Family Dental, we provide our patients with the diagnostic and treatment tools they need to beat any gum infection. When it comes to dental health, it's always easier to prevent issues from springing up than it is to heal a deep-seated infection.
Fight Gum Disease with Routine Dental Check-Ups
Routine dental check-ups and professional cleanings are the first steps in preventing gum disease along with tooth decay and other common oral health issues. During your dental cleaning, our trained dental hygienists take their time in professionally removing any plaque and tartar build-up that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.
During your dental check-up, we can visually inspect your gums for swelling and bleeding, and address any problems before they become costly to treat. We are always happy to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to ensure you get the most from your at-home oral health care.
The more often you see us, the more likely you are in preventing bone loss, gum swelling, tooth loss, and general health issues. If it has been a while since your last teeth cleaning, do not hesitate to call our lovely dental staff! Please call our Nederland dental office today so we can schedule your dental exam.
Clear Aligners
Do you wish your teeth were straight? You’re not alone! Many of our patients want a straight, beautiful smile, but shy away from traditional braces because they can’t imagine years of brackets and wires. If you are looking for an alternative to orthodontics, we offer Invisalign in our Southeast Texas dental office.
Many patients seeking orthodontic treatment wonder if they are good candidates for Invisalign treatment. Invisalign works best for older teens and adult patients with straightforward orthodontic needs.
Invisalign can correct:
- Gaps in your smile
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite
- Overlapping or crowded teeth
- Protruding teeth
If you have a complex surgical or jaw-related problem, Invisalign may not be the best option for you. We can help you get the smile you have always wanted and provide you with treatment options so that your results are both beautiful and comfortable. Invisalign works for most patients and we can discuss your treatment times along with what to expect during treatment at your consultation.
The success of any orthodontic treatment depends on your compliance. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you may be tempted to “cheat” on your treatment by not wearing them as much as you should. Your treatment will progress faster and you will be able to enjoy a new smile sooner if you diligently follow our treatment recommendations.
Invisalign provides many benefits that our patients appreciate:
- Completely clear
- Removable
- Convenient brushing and flossing
- No sharp brackets
- No “tightening” appointments
- Dental cleanings are easy
- Unrestricted diet
Nederland Family Dental Offers Invisalign!
If you are interested in an orthodontic treatment that is discreet and convenient, Invisalign might be the answer you’ve been looking for! Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays to gradually move your teeth into an ideal position over the course of your treatment. Because you can remove your trays to eat and to brush and floss your teeth, Invisalign is the most convenient way to achieve cosmetic results with the least amount of hassle.
Modern and discreet orthodontic treatments such as Invisalign are versatile and work well for many minor orthodontic concerns and cosmetic treatments. Invisalign can correct crooked, overcrowded, or bucked teeth. It is also useful for correcting common issues such as out of place teeth, orthodontic relapse, and a variety of other common concerns.
Other Orthodontic Treatment
In some complex cases involving your occlusion (bite) or TMJD (temporomandibular joint disorder), we may recommend a different treatment such as traditional orthodontics. We are committed to your health and will always recommend the treatment that we believe will give you the best results.
The easiest way to find out what type of orthodontic or cosmetic dental treatment will work best for your unique condition is to schedule an evaluation at Nederland Family Dental.
If you have had orthodontics, you know that your retainer is an important part of the success of your treatment. We offer Invisalign orthodontics in our Nederland, TX dental office.
Wearing a retainer in your mouth means that it is exposed to the foods and bacteria that your teeth endure. Because most removable retainers are made of acrylic or plastic, they easily absorb smells and flavors.
Here is how to keep your retainer clean:
- Brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush anytime you brush your teeth.
- If it collects tartar, soak it in plain white vinegar for an hour and then brush away the residue.
- You can use a stain-remover or refreshing soak designed just for retainers.
- Use gentle castile soap to wash away bacteria.
- Mouthwash can refresh your retainer but may also stain your retainer if left to soak for too long.
- Don’t use anything sharp to scratch buildup off of your retainer as it can cause abrasions that collect bacteria and odors.

Professional Teeth Whitening
If you have yellow teeth or unwanted stains on your smile, perhaps you’ve considered picking up a store-bought teeth whitening kit. While it can be tempting to turn to inexpensive drugstore teeth bleaching products, you should consider professional teeth whitening if you want consistent and customized results that will last.
For most patients, there’s a big difference in their results when they choose to whiten professionally. Why? Because unlike with boxed, one-size-fits-all whitening treatments from the store, a licensed professional will supervise your teeth whitening and provide you with a product that’s designed with your specific mouth in mind.
Our professional teeth whitening in Nederland, TX allows us to customize the strength of your whitening gel, as not everyone has the same whitening needs. With our take-home teeth bleaching trays, you’ll always have a whitening mold that fits your mouth perfectly.
When you use drugstore products, you’re stuck with strips or trays that are generic and mass-produced. These products can’t fit everyone well, and you may end up with missed spots on your teeth or sensitivity in your gums as a result.
In short, professional teeth whitening will provide better, more reliable results that typically last longer and create less irritation than boxed bleaching products. To learn more, give our Nederland dentist a call and schedule a teeth whitening consultation!
Professional Teeth Whitening is Safe!
Several factors lead to stained teeth, including dietary choices and certain medications, but there is good news. Professional teeth whitening treatments prescribed by Nederland Family Dental can make your smile brighter and whiter again…safely.
At Nederland Family Dental, our patients have had fantastic results following our professional teeth whitening treatments.
Our dentist prescribes teeth whitening gel, which means you don’t have to worry about tooth damage. Unlike creams and strips purchased in the drugstore or online, you know exactly what you’re getting through our Nederland, TX dental office.
Teeth whitening treatments begin in our dental office with an impression taken of your teeth and gums. This impression is used to create a custom whitening tray. You take this tray home, along with our prescription-strength gel, and whiten your teeth on your own time.
Avoid leaving work early. Skip rearranging your schedule to keep teeth whitening appointments because you can do it at home. It’s that simple.
And as long as you follow the instructions provided, our teeth whitening system will deliver great results without damaging your teeth.

Composite Fillings
Composite Fillings at Nederland Family Dental
Tooth fillings strengthen and protect teeth with cavities. Although tooth decay is preventable, cavities are one of the most common health problems among children, teenagers, and young adults. Sugary drinks, frequent snacking, and poor dental hygiene all contribute to tooth decay. Left untreated, cavities can lead to severe pain, infection, and even tooth loss.
Prevention is key when it comes to tooth decay. But if your dentist has already found a cavity in your tooth and the roots aren’t affected, you will get a tooth filling to restore it to its full function. If decay has progressed too far into the tooth’s roots, your dentist will likely need to perform a root canal on the tooth rather than a filling.
Scheduling Your Dental Filling Appointment
At your appointment for a tooth filling in Nederland, TX, your dentist will remove the infected part of the tooth and disinfect the area. Next, your dentist will fill the hollow area of the tooth with a material to protect it from further damage. The material hardens to produce a hard, tooth-like surface. Composite, tooth-colored fillings look just like your other teeth.
If you need a tooth filling or are concerned about your teeth, feel free to contact our office to schedule an appointment today!
Reasons Why You Need a Dental Filling
One of the most common preventable conditions in children and adults is tooth decay. While advancements in hygiene and water fluoridation have dramatically decreased the instancesdental filings | general dentistry | nederland tx of decay, most of us will end up with at least one filling over the course of our lifetimes.
If you have decay, you will need a filling once Dr. Whitney Gomez removes the bacteria and damaged tooth structure. Your filling will seal your tooth and prevent additional bacteria and decay from taking hold.
Getting a Dental Filling
At Nederland Family Dental, we provide durable and attractive tooth-colored dental fillings in our Nederland, TX dental office that will blend in with your natural teeth and your smile. Tooth-colored fillings are less sensitive because they are not susceptible to temperature changes from food and beverages that are common with amalgams. They also provide a solution to small chips in the teeth that can collect stains and appear dark.
We diagnose decay with a visual exam and diagnostic x-rays. X-rays are a crucial part of diagnosing oral conditions because they reveal conditions between teeth and enamel that are not visible to the naked eye alone.
If you suspect you need dental fillings, contact our Nederland, TX dental office to book an appointment. We make patient comfort a priority.
We Offer Natural Looking Dental Filling
The composite filling materials used in our Nederland, TX dental office blend seamlessly into your smile. The materials, in fact, are colored and shaped to match your surrounding teeth. No one will know you even have a new filling.
Further, a composite filling will make a damaged tooth look even better than it did before your cavity, and the material helps to strengthen that tooth and keep it viable.
Cavities are holes in teeth brought by decay or bacteria. Unfortunately, even adults get cavities sometimes. The important thing is to see our dentist at the first signs of pain or tooth sensitivity. Timely care prevents deeper cavities that may require a root canal.
Preventing Cavities
Our dentist recommends brushing and flossing twice per day, scheduling and keeping regular dental appointments, and having professional dental cleanings at least twice per year.
It’s also important to avoid sugary drinks and sweets that have been shown to cause cavities in both adults and children.

Dental Implants
What Are Dental Implants Used For?
How To Find Out If They Are Right
Nederland Family Dental Can Place Implants In-House
We know that convenience is important to our patients. It can feel frustrating when you need a procedure and have to travel all over town from specialist to specialist. That is why our dentist seeks additional training and education in order to expand the scope of services we offer.
At Nederland Family Dental, our dentist has the experience and training to place dental implants right in the comfort of our Nederland dental office.
Best Tooth Replacement Option
Dental implants are one of the most effective ways to replace missing teeth because implants are convenient, stable, and long-lasting. They also provide the added health benefit of preventing bone loss because they mimic your natural teeth. The implant itself is very much like the root of your tooth. When we surgically implant it, your dental implant will integrate with your bone in a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, we can restore your dental implant with a crown or bridge.
Did you know that we can hold your dentures in place using dental implants? If you have a hard time wearing dentures and keeping them in place, implant-supported dentures might be just the solution for you.
Call us today to see how dental implants can improve your smile!
Dental Veneers
Porcelain Veneers are Strong and Durable
The porcelain used in veneers is strong and mimics the durability of your teeth’s natural porcelain. Because of this, much of today’s dentistry provides greater longevity than the dentistry of the past. Much like your natural teeth, porcelain veneers are strong but not indestructible.
Here are a few things that put veneers at risk of being lost or damaged:
Poor oral hygiene – Not taking care of your teeth means that you are not taking care of your veneers. Decay can develop around the margins of the restoration and even creep underneath without diligent brushing and flossing habits. Gum disease also puts teeth and dentistry at risk.
Biting into something you shouldn’t – Using your teeth as tools to open packages or bottles is a sure way to end up in trouble; it’s just a matter of time. Use your teeth only for chewing and you can usually stay out of trouble.
Bruxism – Grinding your teeth is bad for your smile and your health. It is also terrible for dental restorations, such as veneers. Dr. Gomez can examine your teeth and mouth to determine if you have a teeth grinding habit. This usually occurs during sleep, so you may not realize it.
Protecting Your Veneers
If you do grind your teeth, a nightguard can protect your veneers.
With the proper care, veneers do have the potential to last a lifetime. Even if your veneer becomes damaged or worn, we can replace it.
For a gentle and experienced cosmetic dentist in Southeast TX, give us a call! We look forward to helping you keep your smile healthy.
Improve Your Smile with Porcelain Veneers
One of the most versatile cosmetic treatments available, porcelain veneers, addresses many common aesthetic concerns. From short and worn teeth to crooked teeth, you can experience major improvements in just a few dental appointments.
If you are looking for a natural smile or to restore the smile of your youth, Dr. G. Whitney Gomez can create a smile that is beautiful and looks like you were born with it. Today’s veneers are more attractive than ever. They no longer have the opaque, bulky look of veneers of the past. Modern materials, custom shading, and smile planning techniques allow us to choose the correct size, color, and shape of veneers to match your facial structure perfectly.
Scheduling Your Dental Veneer Consultation
You might be interested in a celebrity-style smile. Something that is brilliant, white, perfect, uniform, and completely glamorous. At Nederland Family Dental, we can create glamorous smiles, as well. It all depends on your goals for your appearance. Dr. Gomez will take the time necessary to discuss your preferences and make suggestions so that you will achieve the best outcome.

Extractions
We never recommend dental extractions in our Nederland, TX dental office without considering the other options available to improve your oral health. Unfortunately, sometimes a tooth cannot be saved with a dental filling, crown, or root canal.
Here are some conditions that might lead to an extraction. If this happens to you, there is no reason to worry. We are here to help. We offer a number of tooth-replacement options to complete your smile.
Reasons For a Dental Extraction
A tooth broken at the gumline – If there is not enough tooth structure left to restore, we may need to extract your tooth and replace it with a bridge or dental implant.
A split tooth – A tooth that fractures down to the root will not be resolved with a dental crown.
A failed root canal – Sometimes root canal teeth develop a secondary infection or periodontal disease.
Symptomatic wisdom teeth – When inadequate space at the back of the mouth prevents wisdom teeth from erupting properly, extracting them can prevent overcrowding and malocclusion (bite-related issues).
Orthodontic extractions – Today, early orthodontic intervention helps prevent the need for extractions due to overcrowding. If orthodontics does not begin until the jaw is fully developed, removing one or more teeth can assist in successful orthodontic treatment.
If you have any of these conditions please call our office to be seen immediately.
Call Immediately if You Have a Dental Emergency
While we do our very best to provide you with dentistry in a timely fashion and take preventative measures to avoid dental emergencies, they do sometimes happen. We encourage you to call us right away so that we can restore your comfort and help you to avoid any further damage to your teeth. Calling right away also allows us to try to fit you in our schedule the same day.
We want you to feel completely supported. Once you are a patient of record, our doctor is on call 24/7 for your dental emergencies. All it takes is a phone call to the office to take care of you. We can assess the situation over the phone, and we may request that you come in for an emergency dental exam right away.

Laser Dentistry
Unless you have a child with a large or restrictive frenum, you may not be familiar with the term frenectomy. The bands of tissue that attach your lips to your gums between your upper and lower center teeth are called frena. You have two of them. Problems such as tongue-ties or a diastema occur when the frena are too thick, bulky, or too long. A simple surgery can fix the problem so that your child develops normally.
Traditional periodontal surgery requires shortening or removal of frena using the scapel-and-stiches method. Laser dentistry eliminates the need for a painful surgical treatment by using laser light energy to reduce the inhibitive tissue of the frenum. You can expect little to no bleeding, only mild discomfort, and faster healing times with laser dentistry.
Other Laser Dentistry Procedures
In addition to frenectomies, laser dentistry provides comfortable solutions for gingival sculpting, or reducing a gummy smile. We can also use dental lasers to improve periodontal health by eliminating damaged tissue or bacteria and promoting regenerative tissue growth when recession occurs.
If you want more information about laser dentistry and you live in the southeast TX area, contact Nederland Family Dental to discover the possibilities that modern dentistry offers to our patients.
If you have gums that look too prevalent or cover too much of your teeth, creating the look of a gummy smile, we can help you with gingival gum sculpting right here in our Nederland, TX dental office.
Sometimes the appearance of your gums can ruin an otherwise beautiful smile. Your teeth may appear too short or small because of excessive gum tissue. Gingival gum sculpting, when used with dental restorations or on its own, can result in a beautiful outcome.
Why Use Laser Dentistry?
- Faster healing times – We can precisely remove tissue, leaving healthy tissue behind. Laser dentistry cuts and seals gingival tissue, eliminating the need for stitches.
- Greater comfort – Laser treatment is more comfortable than traditional surgery. Patients experience shorter downtimes and can get back to eating comfortably faster.
- Greater precision – More precise gingival sculpting is possible with laser dentistry of the super fine light beam that is used.
Common Uses for Laser Dentistry
One common use for dental lasers is performing frenectomies. In our Southeast TX dental office, we offer frenectomy treatment painlessly.
Your child may need a frenectomy if the thick band of tissue that attaches the upper or lower lip to the gums is too restrictive or bulky. The upper frenum can cause a large gap between upper teeth. A large lower frenum often results in a “tongue-tie” and may negatively impact your child’s speech development by inhibiting the natural movement of their tongue.
Using light energy, we reduce the size of the frenum. The mouth heals very quickly, and your child will experience little discomfort. In most cases, any discomfort that is experienced can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reducer, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Dr. Gomez will discuss the best option for your little one.

Root Canals
While people often associate root canal treatment with pain, we like to let patients know that root canals in our Southeast, TX dental office should feel no different than a normal filling. The pain you are thinking of is likely the extreme symptoms caused by an infection in the tooth. Inflammation caused by infection causes pressure and can impact the nerve, which feels awful.
We are here to help. Root canal treatment can not only relieve pain but also save your tooth from the fate of an extraction. Putting off root canal treatment can make the infection so serious that root canal treatment will not save the tooth. Replacing a missing tooth is usually more expensive and complex than treating the ones you have.
Symptoms of a Root Canal
- Swelling of the gums, face, or jaw
- Discoloration of the tooth
- A small bump on the gums
- A foul taste in the mouth
- Pain or throbbing near the tooth or jaw
If you’ve recently had root canal treatment, it’s important to give your mouth some time to rest and recover.
After undergoing root canal therapy, it’s normal to have soreness and sensitivity around the area. We recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever immediately after your dental appointment, even before the numbness from the anesthesia wears off. This way, you can minimize your post-op pain as you continue to take painkillers such as Advil several times a day.
Feel free to use an ice pack for short amounts of time if the area is particularly painful or swollen after you get home.
If our Nederland, TX dentist prescribed antibiotics for you to take, it’s crucial that you take the antibiotics exactly as directed and that you finish the entire prescription. This will help prevent infection as the site heals each day.
For the first few days following your root canal therapy, it’s a good idea to stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods. Avoid anything with extreme temperatures, such as hot coffee or ice cream, and avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth. You can continue to brush and floss your teeth, but be extra careful around the root canal site.
Soon after your Nederland root canal therapy, our dentist will place a permanent dental crown on the affected tooth to strengthen it and keep it from cracking. Once you have your permanent tooth crown, you can eat and chew as normal.
Sedation Dentistry
Did you know that people with dental phobias are more likely to have cavities and missing teeth? A study in the British Dental Journal found that people with dental phobias had a lower oral health-related quality of life compared to people without a dental phobia. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way!
Sedation dentistry provides a safe, stress-free way for people with dental phobias to get dental care. Conscious sedation simply involves taking oral medication before your dental procedure. With this type of sedation, you can still answer questions during your procedure, yet feel relaxed and worry-free. Some patients even fall asleep during their dental procedure. Either way, since you won’t be aware of time passing, your dental treatment will be over before you know it.
Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment
Before taking advantage of sedation dentistry, your dentist will review your medical history and current medications to determine if you’re a good candidate. On the day of your procedure, you will take the medication in the dental office so your dentist can monitor your vitals. You may feel groggy after the procedure, so you will need a ride home. However, you should feel back to normal the next day!
If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentistry in Nederland, TX, call the office of Dr. Whitney Gomez to schedule a dental consultation. We’re happy to help ease your worries and give you a stress-free experience.
Your dentist may recommend dental sedation in Nederland, TX, for various reasons and will always discuss these with you.
It could be that you:
- Have an easy gag reflex
- Are undergoing multiple treatments
- Are undergoing an invasive procedure
- Are undergoing a complex oral surgery
- Feel anxious or afraid at the dentist
Our dental office offers two types of sedation—oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Oral sedation means you may not remember much of your treatment, and the same is true with the IV option.
However, IV sedation is more potent and gives anxious patients added peace of mind. Either option will require a friend or loved one to drive you to and from treatment. And you should rest for the remainder of the day and hold off on important decisions until the following day.

Sedation Dentistry

We offer complimentary headphones/iPods during your appointment to disguise the sounds of your procedure. You are welcome to bring your own music, as well.
