Expect Root Canal

If you’ve recently had root canal treatment, it’s important to give your mouth some time to rest and recover. 

After undergoing root canal therapy, it’s normal to have soreness and sensitivity around the area. We recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever immediately after your dental appointment, even before the numbness from the anesthesia wears off. This way, you can minimize your post-op pain as you continue to take painkillers such as Advil several times a day. 

Feel free to use an ice pack for short amounts of time if the area is particularly painful or swollen after you get home. 

If our Nederland, TX dentist prescribed antibiotics for you to take, it’s crucial that you take the antibiotics exactly as directed and that you finish the entire prescription. This will help prevent infection as the site heals each day. 

For the first few days following your root canal therapy, it’s a good idea to stick to a diet of liquids and soft foods. Avoid anything with extreme temperatures, such as hot coffee or ice cream, and avoid chewing directly on the treated tooth. You can continue to brush and floss your teeth, but be extra careful around the root canal site.

Soon after your Nederland root canal therapy, our dentist will place a permanent dental crown on the affected tooth to strengthen it and keep it from cracking. Once you have your permanent tooth crown, you can eat and chew as normal.
