When a dental emergency strikes, it can be scary and confusing. We never expect to need an emergency dental appointment, and trauma to our mouth or tooth can be painful and unnerving.

If you do experience a dental emergency, however, it is important to know how to properly handle it. Our team at Nederland Family Dental is here to help make sure you are prepared to deal with any unfortunate dental emergencies that may come up. We have put together a handful of tips to help you cope with your dental emergency:

Stop the Bleeding

First and foremost, you will need to stop any bleeding that is happening as a result of your dental emergency. If you have a cut on your face or mouth, or even if a tooth has been knocked out, do everything you can to prevent further bleeding by applying pressure to the area. If your bleeding is severe or cannot be stopped, head to your local emergency room.

Secure Your Teeth

Many dental emergencies involve loose or knocked-out teeth. If you have lost one or more teeth due to a dental emergency in Nederland, TX, do everything you can to find and secure the teeth. Rinse any teeth that have been knocked out with cold or lukewarm water. If possible, you can use your fingers to hold your tooth in place in its socket until you can get to our dental office. If you cannot hold the tooth in your mouth, you can also place it in a container or clean glass filled with saliva or water.

Reduce Pain and Swelling

You will likely be in pain immediately after your dental emergency. To help reduce pain and facial swelling, you can immediately apply a cold towel to your face and take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen.

Call Our Dentist Right Away

The best thing to do in the case of a dental emergency is to call our Nederland family dentist immediately. Unless you are bleeding severely or have experienced other significant trauma to your body, it is best to come straight to our dental office rather than going to the hospital. We will do everything we can to see you right after your emergency and to provide treatment as quickly as we can.
