No one wants to live with gaps in their smile.  But when you’re choosing to replace missing teeth, it’s important to understand your options so that you can get the best value for the money you spend.  While bridges and partials are low-cost options for tooth replacement, modern dental technology has given us a better option, one that comes very close to replacing all the form and function of a natural tooth – the dental implant.

What Makes Implants Better?

Dental implants are a step up from older forms of tooth replacement technology. Why?

  • Unlike a bridge, an implant doesn’t require damage to healthy teeth. Placing a bridge requires the dentist to make permanent changes to the teeth on either side. Implants don’t affect other teeth.
  • An implant is the same shape and size as a natural tooth.  That means that it’s easier to keep it, and the surrounding teeth, clean.  Partials and implants can make it harder to keep surrounding teeth healthy.
  • Implants last longer than bridges or partials. The implant crown is replaceable, just like any crown, but with good care, it can last up to 15 years.  The "root" of the implant will last a lifetime.  That means less worry and fewer dental visits over time.
  • Implants stay in place. Implants are as strong as a natural tooth. You can chew and speak without fear. (Just don’t use them to open packages. You shouldn’t do that with natural teeth either!)
  • The implant is placed in your jaw, just like a real tooth. Bridges and partials are purely cosmetic. They sit in your mouth and cover up the fact that you have missing teeth.
  • An implant has both a root (made from titanium) and a crown, so it fully takes the place of your missing tooth. That means that it keeps your jaws and gums healthy and strong, while other replacement methods leave holes.  Over time, these gaps in the tissue can leave your jaw weaker or become host to pockets of infection. Implants fill these gaps and allow your mouth to heal.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Most teens and adults are good candidates for dental implants in Nederland. One important exception is people who currently experience severe gum disease. We’ll need to help you restore your gums to health before you can start the implant process. Would you like to learn more about Nederland Family Dental’s implant program and see what options best fit your needs?  Call today to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists!
