What is a Frenectomy?
As part of our mouth anatomy, we have small flaps of skin that connect our upper and lower lips to our gum tissue and our tongue to the floor of the mouth. For most patients, these are rarely thought about and function just fine. When that small tissue flap is too bulky or long, however, it can create what is commonly called a tongue-tie. It can even create a gap between your two front teeth.
Addressing this problem is a simple task, in most cases. A minor surgery can correct this issue and prevent the gap between teeth and the speech challenges that often come with a tongue-tie. This is usually done when children are very young, before the onset of speech development.
In the past, however, treatment could cause quite a bit of discomfort both during the procedure itself and the healing process. When considering performing this treatment on anyone, especially children, Dr. Whitney Gomez wanted a gentler and more precise way to achieve great results.
Laser dentistry allows us to provide gentler and more comfortable treatment when it comes to frenectomies and other types of periodontal surgeries. Rather than the cut-and-stitch method of surgery, we use laser light energy to eliminate excessive tissue. Laser surgery eliminates and seals the tissue simultaneously without the need for stitches. This results in less discomfort, reduced bleeding, and faster healing times.
This is just one of the reasons why we recommend that children have early dental appointments. That way, we can determine if any of these issues might affect the normal development of your child. We welcome your entire family to Nederland Family Dental, including your youngest family members.
Our commitment to gentle, modern dentistry makes treatment for any condition smooth, predictable, and precise. Dr. Gomez’s commitment to continuing education and advanced dental technology consistently gives our patients a reason to smile.
